Fountains or Swimming Pools

Florida State University students all know good and well that if it is a fountain it is also a swimming pool. Not many other universities or colleges allow swimming in the fountains, this is because Florida State is obviously the best University in the country. Well maybe I am a little bias.

The fountains serve as a swimming pool during the day for humans and their furry friends to cool off from the hot sun. But wait there is another special tradition that revolves around the fountains, right? Yes, on each student’s twenty-first birthday their friends are supposed to throw them into the fountain to ‘initiate’ them as a true Florida State University student.

Not only do students have traditions of getting in the fountain/being thrown in, but the fountains are known for their pranks. The most popular prank is for a student to add a detergent to the fountain causing it to overflow with bubbles. Pranks turn the fountain’s into greater attractions than they already as simple fountains. Students heard around the fountains to take pictures, snapchat stories, and videos of the bubbly fountain. Another prank, although not as common, is dying the water color. How weird would it be to walk by a fountain that looks like it is full of blood? Students do love the pranks and they draw an abundance of attention to the fountains, but they also require extra work for the grounds keepers.

Lastly, during the winter season there are various days when Florida actually gets cold enough to freeze and majestic icicles are form on the fountains. Come to think of it, they may not be that great. We are in Florida. Everybody knows ‘Floridians’ go insane when there is any snow or ice on the ground. But that is a whole other story.
